What is GMAT?

GMAT stands for Graduate Management Admission Test. This exam was introduced in 1954 and is reviewed and managed by The Graduate Management Council (GMAC). Understanding GMAT

The GMAT exam is a time-bound and multiple-choice exam divided into 4 main sections. These sections are Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Integrated Reasoning and Analytical Writing Assessment. The GMAT exam is 3 hours and 7 minutes with two 8-minute optional breaks. It is a computer-based t(online) test but in areas with no computer access, candidates can visit the centre and appear for an offline test too! What are the GMAT Test Modules?

1. Quantitative Reasoning: The Quant section is designed to check a candidate’s ability to solve math-related problems, including number properties, algebra, geometry and statistics. The Quantitative Reasoning section consists of two problem types: Data-Sufficiency and Problem-Solving.

  • The time limit of this section is 62 minutes, and the number of questions asked is 31.

2. Verbal Reasoning: The Verbal section gauges the student’s command over the English language in written format. It also evaluates your skill in analysing arguments and your ability to read and comprehend. This section includes three problem types: Critical Reasoning, Sentence Correction, and Reading Comprehension.

  • The time limit of this section is 65 minutes, and the number of questions asked is 36.

3. Integrated Reasoning: IR is a combination of Quant and Verbal. In this section, a lot of data will be provided to you. This section measures your ability to analyse data and pick only relevant pieces of information. This section comprises four problem types: Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation and Two-Part Analysis.

  • The time limit of this section is 30 minutes, and the number of questions asked is 12.

4. Analytical Writing Assessment: This is an essay section wherein evaluators analyse your writing skills.

You will be presented with 3 types of section orders for the exam. You can select the section order which is most comfortable for you.

GMAT Scoring Pattern

The ideal GMAT score to get admission to the top 10 B-schools is within the range of 710 to 740. Hence,
you must set a goal of achieving 710 or higher. The maximum score one can achieve is 800. But if you don’t fare to that level,
there are many schools to which you can apply with a lower score.
